Mabel for plumbers

Missed the call under the sink? Mabel texts them back and books the job.

A leak doesn't wait for you to dry your hands. When a call rings out, Mabel sends the caller a text straight away with a link to book, or they just reply, and Mabel asks what the job is and where, and offers a time that is free in your calendar. You get a text with the booking and confirm it when you're out from under the sink.

The calls a plumber can't take

Most calls come in while you're already on a job: hands wet, phone in the van, a customer watching you work. Some are a dripping tap that can wait until next week. Some are water coming through a ceiling. The caller can't tell which you'd rather take, and if nobody answers, the next plumber on their list is one tap away.

Mabel answers those by text, with a link to a short booking form. The customer picks the job from your list, gives the postcode and picks their address (or the house number, by text), and chooses a time that is free in your calendar. If they mention a leak, a burst or water everywhere, you hear about it straight away instead of at the end of the day.

A photo of the leak before you set off

Switch on photos in Settings and Mabel asks the customer for a picture of the problem with their booking: the weeping joint, the cracked cistern, the tap that won't stop. You see what you're walking into, and what to bring. Photos are checked before you see them.

What your customer gets

Word for word, the message a caller hears and the texts that follow, for an example business, Patel Plumbing. Only the names and the link change.

They hear

Thanks for calling Patel Plumbing. Ravi is on a job. We're texting you now so you can book a time. If it's personal, just reply PERSONAL to the text and Ravi will get back to you.

Then this text arrives

Sorry we missed your call to Patel Plumbing. Ravi is on a job. Book in a minute here: mabelhq.co.uk/b/Ab3dE5gH7j Or just reply to this text and we'll take your details here. Not a customer? If they reply to the text instead

Thanks. How can we help? 1. Leak repair 2. Dripping tap 3. Blocked sink 4. Blocked toilet 5. Toilet repair 6. Other Just reply with a number.

On the form they enter their postcode and pick their address from the list; by text, Mabel asks for a few words about the job, the postcode and the house number. Either way they choose a time that is free in your calendar, and the booking is read back for them to check. You get a text with the job, and you confirm it.

Urgent words

If a customer's text uses one of your urgent words, Mabel texts you straight away with what they wrote, and tells them you know. The booking carries on as normal. A new account for plumbers starts with these words, and you can change them:

  • gas smell
  • smell gas
  • carbon monoxide
  • leak
  • leaking
  • burst
  • flood
  • flooding
  • water everywhere
  • no water
  • overflowing
  • ceiling dripping

The customer reads:

This sounds urgent, so we've let Ravi know straight away, and you'll get a call back as soon as possible.

Add an emergency number in Settings and Mabel gives them that as well. Your own mobile number is never given out.

Questions from plumbers

Does Mabel answer my phone?

No, your phone rings as normal. Calls you don't pick up go to your Mabel number, the caller hears one short message saying you're on a job and a text is on its way, and then the text arrives. If you'd rather every call went straight to Mabel, there's a setting for that.

What if someone has water pouring through the ceiling?

If their text says burst, flood, water everywhere or any of your other urgent words, you get a text straight away with what they wrote, and they're told you'll call back as soon as possible. The booking carries on as normal, so they can still pick a time.

Can it book a bathroom fit as well as a dripping tap?

Yes. Every job on your menu has its own rough time, so a dripping tap might be an hour and a bath fitted all day. Mabel uses that time when it looks for a free slot, with room to drive between jobs.

Do my customers need to download anything?

No. It's ordinary texts, with a short link to a one-page booking form for anyone who'd rather tap than type. Replying to the text works just as well.

What about callers on a landline?

A landline can't get a text. The caller hears that you'll see they rang and will call them back, so those calls are still yours to return, as they are now.

What does it cost?
